Is there a grace period for PCTs to obtain certification beyond the 18-month time frame?
No. PCTs who were employed when the Conditions for Coverage became effective on October 14, 2008, had until April 15, 2010, to become certified.
PCTs who were hired after October 14, 2008, had 18 months from their hire date to become certified.
There is no grace period for PCTs who fail the certification exam. If the PCT does not obtain certification within the 18-month time frame, he/she cannot work as a PCT.

If an uncertified PCT, who has worked in one facility or for one company less than 18-months, decides to change employers, is he/she then considered a "new employee" in regards to obtaining certification?
A PCT who changes employers within 18 months of hire without obtaining certification is not considered a new employee. His/her previous work time will count toward the 18-month deadline.
Exception: A PCT will be considered a new employee if there has been at least an 18-month gap between his/her prior and current positions as a PCT.
