Nutrition and Chronic Kidney Disease

Patients under the care of a nephrologist and who see a registered dietitian for nutrition therapy prior to starting dialysis are often in better health and have fewer nutritional complications when they start dialysis than those patients who do not receive that prior care. Registered dietitians provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to patients who have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and to patients who have Diabetes Mellitus (DM). This type of care is available to patients prior to starting dialysis and is covered by Medicare and many other insurance carriers.

In an effort to provide CKD patients with easy access to some basic diet information, the Virginia Council on Renal Nutrition (VACRN), with support from MARC, developed a series of six (6) nutrition handouts that  can be downloaded and used by both patients and professionals.
