Until 2008, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) collected scientifically derived samples of data to produce the Clinical Performance Measures (CPMs) for adult hemodialysis (HD), adult peritoneal dialysis (PD), and pediatric patients. The adult HD sample, taken annually from the 4th quarter and stratified by Network, was of sufficient size to allow estimation of Network-specific measures with a 95% confidence interval around the estimates that was no larger than 10 percentage points (i.e., ± 5%).
