In-Center hemodialysis consumer assessment of healthcare providers & systems (Ich cahps)
The In-Center Hemodialysis Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (ICH CAHPS) is a survey that measures the patient’s experience of care within specific aspects of dialysis care received. It is not a satisfaction survey, which is partly a function of expectations.
The survey is a research based, validated instrument developed by ARHQ in collaboration with Health & Human Services & CMS and several grantees over a multi-year period. It is a part of a family of surveys designed to collect data from patients and other consumers about their experiences with the care they receive from their health care providers. It’s important to note that high problem scores are correlated with higher morbidity and mortality in patients.
Facilities are required to authorize a third party vendor approved by CMS to administer the survey. This is to ensure patient confidentiality. It also reduces any influence from facilities. Patients will be notified by mail if they are being requested to participate in the survey.
One of the main purposes of the dialysis ICH CAHPS survey is to be able to provide comparative information to patients. Facility survey results are anticipated to be reported on the Dialysis Facility Compare (DFC) website in the near future. They are currently one of the measures used in the DFC Star Rating System. The scores are also one of the clinical measures used in determining facility reimbursement with the QIP.
