Network 5 Pediatric Nephrology Providers

As of September, 2008, there were approximately 265 patients, ages 0 to 24, with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) receiving dialysis in Network 5.  These patients experience distinctive etiologies and treatment modalities.  For example, in 2008, data collected through the Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Medical Evidence Report,  show that glomerulonephritis  in this age group is the leading cause of chronic kidney failure.  This primary cause is followed by cystic, hereditary, and congenital conditions; diabetes with renal manifestations; neoplasms;  interstitial nephritis/pyelonepritis; and unknown/uncertain causes.  The majority of pediatric patients, defined as those less than 19 years of age, utilize  continuous cycler peritoneal dialysis (CCPD).  In this age group, two (2) of three (3) patients receive pre-ESRD  care from a nephrologist;  however a catheter access rather than arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is  more likely to be used at dialysis initiation.

Network 5 is partnering with pediatric nephrologists and other healthcare professionals to develop a regional pediatric provider quality initiative.  The initiative is aimed at identifying the specific needs of pediatric patients and ways to improve outcomes for this segment of the ESRD population.

For additional information on the pediatric nephrology initiative, contact Edie Frankovich, MARC Quality Improvement Coordinator.
