From 1996 through
2000, Network 5 conducted special data collection for 100% of
the hemodialysis (HD) patient population. Dialysis facilities
submitted data either manually or in an Excel spreadsheet. Network
11 demonstrated that facility-specific profiles could be
generated from laboratory data that were electronically submitted
from the laboratory to Network 11 (This is referred to as the
ELab Project). Network 5 began participating in the Elab Project
in 2000 with the University
of Minnesota's Biostatistics Consulting Laboratory serving
as the project's bio-statistical consultant. Facility data is
aggregated based on a calculated three-month (4th
quarter) average value for their patients. In August 2001, facility-specific
reports were distributed and included comparative and trending
data, reference to K-DOQI
and Network Medical Review Committee Guidelines, and a list
of patient-specific values used in the calculations. In addition,
the 4th Quarter 2000 data were utilized to identify
facilities for mandatory participation in the Network's Quality
Improvement Project to further improve the adequacy of dialysis.
Participating facilities received additional data analysis and
attended an educational workshop in October 2001. The Network's
participation in the ELab project continued for the 4th
Quarter 2001 data collected in 2002. In July 2002, facility
specific reports were distributed for the adult hemodialysis
data.
